How to Start a Blog With Wix: (A Step-by-Step Beginner's Guide) – Infotechblogging

Starting a blog on Wix is one of the easiest things you can do. It’s even easier than WordPress to set up and to customize!

Blogging is one way that people can make money online, even if they have zero experience setting up a blog.

If you’re looking to start a blog for cheap, then choosing Wix for creating and hosting your blog may be your answer. Wix is an awesome website building site and will also host your site. I personally have had a great experience with this service, which is why I continue to prefer it over WordPress.

Once you’ve created your Wix account, use the tutorial below for easy, step-by-step directions.

Why Should I Start a Blog?

Blogging is one of the best ways to make money. Many bloggers have turned their hobby into a six-figure income with some people, like Michelle Schroeder-Gardner of Making Sense of Cents, making over $50,000 on average per month. Yes, that’s right, in a month, not a year.

Other awesome benefits include:

  • Being able to work from home
  • You can travel whenever you want
  • A flexible schedule that fits your lifestyle
  • There is no limit to the amount of money you can make (and you can make it while you sleep)
  • You get to talk about/write about what you are passionate about
  • You can work from anywhere
  • The start-up cost is very low

Can’t I Just Use a Free Blog Site like Blogger/Blogspot?

First of all, have you actually seen a successful blog run on Blogger? I haven’t since before the year 2000. The ones that are still around look like, well they look amateur to say the least.

It’s extremely difficult if not impossible to run any of your own advertisements, affiliate links, direct advertising, etc., with a free blogging platform.

Making money on Blogger or any other free blogging platform is very difficult, and in many cases never happens. Most advertisers and companies tend to run away from Blogger websites because they don’t view them as professional as self-hosted blogs, so that’s another big reason to use Wix.

In order to make money from your blog in the form of affiliate marketing for instance, you need to sign up for affiliate programs and guess what? You have to include the web address of your blog and they will look it over to see if it meets their standards.

Why Choose Wix?

There are many reasons why you may want to choose Wix for your creating your blog.

  • It’s much easier to use than say, Bluehost.
  • It’s better equipped for SEO from the very start with better control over your posts, permalinks, tags, categories and so forth.
  • You can get your site up and running very quickly.
  • Pre-designed templates make editing your blog really simple, and they look professional.
  • They offer all-in-one packages – Wix hosts your website for you so you don’t need to then go looking for a place to host your site.
  • You can purchase your domain name directly through them (it’s super simple)
  • You can get a customized email for your domain set up through them as well (and it’s ready to go in minutes)
  • Wix will help you design a modern and stylish-looking website, with no technical or coding experience required (hello drag-and-drop!)
  • Free domain for the first year
  • SSL Certificate
  • Over 500+ templates to choose from
  • They offer 24/7 technical support and provide guidance when you go to design your blog

First, you will need to head on over to Wix to do any of this. There are many web hosting/design companies out there, but Wix is honestly the one for beginners who have little to no experience setting up their own blog. There is a reason why many bloggers go with Wix for starting a blog.

If you plan on starting a blog on Wix and you are interested in learning how to start a blog on Wix, continue below.

How to Start a Blog With Wix

1. Sign Up With a Free Account

When you sign up for a free account with Wix there are just three shorts steps:

  1. Go to Wix.com
  2. Click on the “Get Started” button
  3. Enter your email address and choose a password or continue with Google or Facebook.

Wix does not ask for credit card details or any other personal information. Instead, they provide you with a fast sign up process, and you can literally sign up in under a minute.

2. Decide What Kind of Blog You Want

In this case, for this tutorial you would select “blog” as this is a step-by-step guide on how to start a blog but you can select a different format or skip this step if you’re not sure.

When you type words onto the space it will bring up other suggestions to narrow it down.

For example, when I click on “blog” it will give me suggestions such as “technology blog” and “entertainment blog.”

If you already know what kind of blog you want, such as a lifestyle blog or travel blog you can click on that or type it in.

This is optional at this point and you can change it any time.

3. Pick a Name for Your Blog

It’s OK if you don’t have a name picked out for your blog yet, this is optional as well and you can add it later.

4. Choose Features for Your Website

If you already know the features you want included in your website or blog you can select them now.

If you don’t know what you want that’s OK, this is optional and you can add them later very easily from the main editing menu so don’t worry about it right now.

5. Let Wix ADI create Your Site for You OR Choose Your Own Template to Edit

Wix ADI is an artificial intelligence answer to what you want in a website based on what answers you give to the questions it asks you.

It can save a lot of time, especially if you don’t have anything specific in mind.

I have used both and I found that looking through the different templates they offer and choosing the template that suited my taste worked out better for me in the long run even though it took me longer in the beginning.

Please note that if you choose to let Wix ADI design your site, you will be limited in how much you can edit it afterwards. Whereas if you choose your own template, you get to be in charge of every aspect of your website. You can customize pretty much everything.

Choose your template:

Browse through all the different templates offered (free) and see which one suits your needs.

As your mouse goes over the template photo you have the option to “try it.”

By clicking on “try it” you will see all the variations of the template you can choose from. It changes the color scheme as well as the fonts.

You can also see how the template looks for mobile.

You can always modify your template later in the editor, so don’t feel that you have to decide right away.

When you find a template you like you can click on the “Use this template” button in the top right hand corner.

6. Customize Your Blog

Once you have selected the template for your blog you can begin to customize it.

The editing menu is on the left-side of the screen.

Simply click on any menu buttons for further options to add or edit your site.

7. Connect Your Domain

To connect your newly created blog to a domain name that you want (such as TheShoeBlog.com for example) click on “connect your domain” at the top of the screen.

If you have already purchased a domain name before you created your Wix site you can connect it now or choose the option “Get a new domain name.”

**Please note: If you are in Canada and want a domain that ends in .ca you will need to purchase it outside of Wix and connect it later. You cannot purchase the domain .ca through Wix at this time.

In order to have your own domain name you must select a monthly plan to purchase.

By not purchasing a domain name through Wix or outside of Wix and connecting it you will only have a custom domain name that will look something like this:

https://yourname.wixsite.com/theshoeblog (your blog name)

As I mentioned before, if you are starting a blog to make money you will need your own blog domain.

8. Publish Your Blog

When you’re done editing your blog to your liking, and optimized it for mobile users and search engines (SEO), you can publish your site. When you publish your blog the entire world gets to see your blog (it goes live).

To publish your blog click on the big blue “Publish” button at the top-right corner of your browser. Wix will publish your website, and show you a popup window to confirm that your blog has gone live.

Once your site goes live you can start sending your link to your friends, family and to social media.

Congrats! You did it! You just created your own blog!

Have fun writing your first blog post and creating your own successful blog.
